Under accusation of fraud with EU subsidies/ Czech Parliament refuses to lift

The Czech parliament refused to lift the immunity of the prime minister and the speaker of parliament as legislators, protecting them from prosecution in criminal cases.

Prime Minister Andrej Babis is facing charges of fraud with EU subsidies, while parliamentary speaker Tomio Okamura is accused of inciting hatred.

A total of 104 lawmakers in the 200-seat parliament of the Czech Republic, an EU and NATO member with 10.9 million inhabitants, voted against lifting their immunity.

Babis, the 71-year-old Slovakian-born politician, is facing fraud charges dating back to 2007, in connection with his Stork Nest farm south of Prague.

Babis, in office since last December after also serving as prime minister from 2017-2021, called the charges "an attempt to overturn the result of the democratic election." /CNA
