Explosion in one of Dubai's Marina Towers / Surrounding buildings evacuated

Buildings around Dubai Marina have been evacuated after debris from shell interceptions caused an explosion after hitting the facade of a high-rise building in the United Arab Emirates city.

In a statement on social media, the Dubai Media Office said no one was injured in the incident.

"Authorities confirm that debris resulting from a successful interception caused a minor incident on the facade of a tower in Dubai Marina. The situation is under control. No injuries were reported ," the statement said. 

The marina is close to many of the city's tourist attractions and institutions, including the American University of Dubai and the Dubai Marina Mall.

As the sound of missile intercepts echoed across the city and evacuations began, residents of Dubai and Abu Dhabi received warnings on their mobile phones of incoming missiles.

The attacks came shortly after the president of the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, made the first and rare public statement describing Iran as an "enemy."

"The United Arab Emirates is beautiful, the United Arab Emirates is a model to follow, but I tell you, do not be fooled by this. The hand of the United Arab Emirates can reach and it is strong, its flesh is bitter and we are not easy prey," he warned Tehran as he visited a hospital, which is treating civilians injured in the attacks. /CNA
