European Parliament Rapporteur on Kosovo: Failure to elect president is a step

The rapporteur for Kosovo in the European Parliament, Riho Terras, has described the failure of the Kosovo Assembly to elect the country's new president as a "step backwards".

"Instead of stability, the country faces new political uncertainty. Truly disappointing," Terras wrote in a post on the social network X, after the Assembly failed to conclude the process of electing the president.

His reaction comes after Kosovo's president, Vjosa Osmani, announced that she has issued a decree to dissolve the Assembly, arguing that MPs failed to fulfill their constitutional obligation to elect a president within the deadline.

According to Osmani, March 5 was the constitutional deadline for the Assembly to elect a new president, 30 days before the end of its mandate on April 4. She said the failed attempts to elect a president were neither accidental nor thoughtless, but “calculated.”

"It is a great misfortune that they did not choose the interest of Kosovo," said Osmani, adding that through the decree they are fulfilling their constitutional obligation.

The last session of the Parliament to elect the president, on March 5, was interrupted due to lack of quorum, as the opposition parties' deputies were absent from the hall. The candidates for the post were Glauk Konjufca and Fatmire Kollçaku-Mullhaxha from the Vetëvendosje Movement.

The ruling Vetevendosje Movement has opposed Osmani's decree, calling it an "unprecedented act" that violates the constitutional order. Its officials have said the country has 60 days to elect a president and have referred the case to the Constitutional Court.

Meanwhile, Osmani held a meeting with the leaders of political parties, where the leaders of the LVV did not participate, to announce new early elections./ Rel
