UN global meeting in Spain/ Aims to raise funds to fight poverty

Many of the world's countries gathered in Spain on Monday in an effort to address the growing gap between rich and poor nations and raise the trillions of dollars needed to close it.

"Financing is the engine of development. And now, this engine is failing," said United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his opening remarks at the four-day Financing for Development meeting in Seville.

Many countries face rising debt burdens, falling investment, declining international aid, and rising trade barriers.

Co-organizers, the UN and Spain, believe the four-day meeting is an opportunity to close the staggering $4 trillion annual financing gap to boost development, lift millions of people out of poverty and help achieve the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, which are far behind schedule.

Although the meeting comes amid global economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions, there is hope that the world can address one of the most important global challenges: ensuring that all people have access to food, healthcare, education and water./CNA
