Wave of arrests and executions in Iran after war with Israel

Iranian authorities have arrested hundreds of people and executed dozens more in another wave of repression following the 12-day war with Israel, according to human rights groups who accuse Tehran of sowing fear to hide its weaknesses.

According to the Norway-based NGO Human Rights in Iran, six men were hanged as spies for Israel, dozens more were executed on other charges, and more than 1,000 were arrested for war-related events.

According to Roya Boroumand, executive director of the American NGO Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights, Iranian authorities are trying to suppress popular discontent over the "humiliating blow" the country suffered from Israel, which demonstrated Tehran's inability to control its airspace and protect its citizens.

"To maintain control and prevent their internal opponents from organizing and mobilizing their forces, Iranian leaders are using fear. And, most likely, they are just getting started," Boroumand said.

Following the Israeli raid on Evin prison on June 23, in which 79 people were killed according to Iranian authorities, prisoners were transferred to undisclosed locations. Among those transferred may be Frenchwoman Cecile Koller and her partner Jacques Paris, who have been held captive for three years, as well as student Ali Younesi, who has been imprisoned since April 2020./CNA
