White House: US and Canada resume trade negotiations

Official Washington announced that it will immediately begin new trade negotiations with Canada, following the Canadian government's decision to withdraw a tax on digital services that mainly targeted American technology companies.

White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett confirmed the resumption of talks in an interview with Fox News.

He said President Donald Trump had personally asked Canada to lift the tariff during the G7 summit in Northern Canada.

"They studied it, they accepted it, and that certainly means we can go back to the negotiating table," Hassett said.

Trump said Friday he was suspending trade talks with Canada after its government confirmed it planned to keep a digital services tax in place despite a recent G-7 agreement on such taxes. The president added at the time that he would announce a higher tariff rate for the neighboring country within a week. /CNA
