Naples hit by strongest earthquake in 40 years/ Train lines suspended

Naples has been hit by its strongest earthquake in 40 years after a 4.6-magnitude quake struck the southern Italian city. The tremors sent people rushing out into the streets and caused major delays to local trains and metro services.

Some reports said there were power outages across the city. The largest quake was followed by three smaller aftershocks under a magnitude of two.

The epicenter was near Bacoli, approximately 10 miles west of Naples and at a depth of about three miles.

The Italian news agency ANSA described the quake as the strongest in 40 years. Luigi Manzoni, mayor of the nearby city of Pozzuoli, said: “The earthquake we warned about was strong, but at the moment there are no reports of damage. The epicentre was in Bacoli, but we are facing a situation that needs to be monitored hour by hour. Our volunteers are already in the city closely monitoring the situation.”

No damage or injuries were reported. This volcanic region of Italy is known to be particularly prone to earthquakes due to its location near the meeting point of the Eurasian and African tectonic plates. The city was hit by a similar magnitude earthquake in March, when another quake reached magnitude 4.4.

Some local train services in the Naples area were suspended on Monday after a 4.6 magnitude earthquake.

Services were suspended following the implementation of a protocol in cases of seismic activity with a magnitude above 4.0.
