US and Iran exchange fire as tensions rise over Strait of Hormuz

Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated again, as both sides have exchanged new military attacks, calling into question the future of the temporary ceasefire reached in June.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that US forces struck dozens of Iranian military targets, including air defense systems, coastal radars, as well as missile and drone capabilities. According to Iranian state media, the attacks killed one person and wounded four others.

In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had struck US military bases in Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan, widening the scope of the conflict in the region.

Another flashpoint remains the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil shipping lanes. Iran claims to have closed the sea passage until further notice, while the US insists that shipping remains open and that its forces are ready to guarantee the safety of merchant ships.

The escalation of the situation has also affected international energy markets. The price of Brent oil rose by more than 4%, reaching around $79 a barrel, while analysts warn that tensions in Hormuz could further affect global energy supplies.

Despite the exchange of attacks, diplomatic efforts to restore the ceasefire and resume negotiations between Washington and Tehran continue, while the international community calls for a reduction in tensions./ CNA
