Serbia/ 11 people are arrested in connection with the tragedy in Novi Sad

The High Public Prosecutor's Office in Novi Sad, Serbia, announced on Thursday that 11 people have been arrested in connection with the collapse of a shelter at a railway station earlier this month, in which 15 people died.

The concrete shelter at the newly renovated station in the northern Serbian city collapsed on November 1, leaving 14 people dead on the spot, and three injured.

On Sunday, one of the injured died, bringing the total number of dead to 15.

The Prosecutor's Office said in a statement that 11 people were arrested for committing criminal offenses against public safety, after interviewing a number of citizens and analyzing the incident.

In the announcement, only the initials of the arrested persons were given.

The tragedy in Novi Sad sparked a wave of protests in Serbia.

A few days after the incident, the Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of Serbia, Goran Vesi?, resigned.

However, Vesiq said in an extraordinary press conference that he does not accept the blame for the incident, but resigned as a "responsible man".

The main railway station building in Novi Sad was reopened in July 2024, after three years of reconstruction.

The Serbian Railways institution said on the day of the incident that the concrete shelter that collapsed "was not rebuilt and was not part of the renovations".

However, experts declare that even that part has been subject to reconstruction.

The reconstruction works were carried out by a Chinese consortium./REL
