Scholz: Deportation of migrants who have been refused asylum must be accelerated
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said that Germany should begin the deportation "on a large scale" of migrants who do not have the right to stay in this country.

He has been commenting on this topic more and more since his government coalition performed poorly in the two state elections earlier in the year.

Scholz made these comments in an interview with Der Spiegel, following calls from the opposition for the centre-left chancellor to form a government coalition with the conservatives to deal with migration issues.

Scholz has signaled a personal initiative to take up the issue, as conservatives and the far-right Alternative for Germany party have seen significant gains in the polls.

Last week, Scholz introduced legislation to ease the process of deporting migrants who have been denied asylum.

He also held several meetings with state governors about ways to combat the number of migrants.

On Monday, the German Government notified the European Commission of temporary border controls on the border with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland.

The centers for migrants and refugees have been full in recent months, after the increase in the number of migrants, especially since the start of Russia's war in Ukraine.

In Friday's interview, Scholz repeated that "many are coming".

"We must deport on a large scale those who have no right to stay in Germany," he was quoted as saying, adding that the deportation must happen "quickly."

EU states agreed last week on a final draft of rules to manage irregular migration and asylum procedures.

When it comes into force, this new agreement on migration and asylum will ease the pressure on EU countries that face the most migrants, such as Italy and Greece, as some migrants will be able to be transferred to other countries. block./ REL
