There is no request for visa suspension, the French Embassy in Kosovo clarifies

The Embassy of France in Kosovo has clarified and commented on the statement of the French president, Emmanuel Macron, on the suspension of visas with Kosovo.

"Today, on October 18, nothing has been decided to prevent the liberalization of visas on January 1. There is no technical decision to question the liberalization of visas for Kosovo," the French embassy in Kosovo said.

In response to SchengenVisaInfo.com, the embassy said that Macron from Tirana wanted to convey a political message to Kosovo and Serbia, and therefore, he expects that "the authorities in Kosovo as well as those in Serbia will keep their promises them and commit to making progress in the coming weeks" regarding the EU-brokered dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade aimed at reaching a normalization agreement.

According to the ambassador of France in Kosovo, Olivier Gero, Macron's statement about the visas has been misinterpreted. He told the local media that there is no decision on the suspension of visas for Kosovo from France and that visa liberalization will come into effect on January 1, 2024.

Brussels sources told RFE/RL that visa suspension is only possible through procedures in the EU Council, using the visa suspension mechanism regulation from 2018.

Diplomatic sources within the EU clarified that it is not possible for a country to suspend visa liberalization for another country and this can only be done through an EU Council regulation.

Even the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has said that the French institutions have informed her that the visa liberalization process for Kosovars has not been postponed./ CNA
