Police clash with protesters near the American Embassy in Beirut

Police clashed with protesters on Wednesday during demonstrations in Lebanon against Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip and a deadly explosion at a hospital there that is believed to have killed hundreds of people.

Lebanese police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters near the United States Embassy on the outskirts of the capital Beirut.

Hundreds of people protested along a road leading to the US Embassy.

Angry protesters tried to break through a barbed wire barrier blocking the road to the US Embassy, ??according to the DPA news agency.

"We are aware of the protests in Awkar near the Embassy. "Unfortunately, violent protesters damaged private property in the neighborhood surrounding the Embassy, ??but Embassy staff and personnel are safe and unharmed," said US Embassy spokesman Jake Nelson.

He thanked the Lebanese security forces for their quick response to secure the area.

Protests in Lebanon and the Muslim world erupted on Wednesday after an explosion at a hospital in the Gaza Strip killed hundreds of people on Tuesday night.

The Palestinian militant group Hamas has blamed Israel for the blast, which according to the Gaza Ministry of Health killed around 500 people.

Israel said it was not responsible and blamed Islamic Jihad, another Palestinian group in Gaza, for the blast.

Also, the United States said that the data proves that Israel is not to blame for the explosion.

"While we continue to gather information, our current assessment, based on analysis of aerial footage, intercepts and open source information, is that Israel is not responsible for yesterday's Gaza hospital explosion," the White House said Wednesday. ./ REL
