The US State Department on Thursday called on American citizens abroad to be vigilant, due to the increase in tensions in various countries of the world and the risk of extremist attacks and violence against Americans, in the conditions of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The warning did not name any specific events, but comes amid conflict in the Middle East after the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7 and Israel responded with airstrikes on Hamas-controlled Gaza, killing thousands.

Tuesday's blast at a hospital in Gaza sparked demonstrations in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian West Bank, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia and elsewhere.

Palestinian officials said the explosion was caused by an Israeli airstrike, but Israel denied this.

The United States said it has evidence that Israel was not responsible for the deadly attack. Lebanese security forces fired tear gas at protesters throwing paraphernalia near the US embassy in Beirut on Thursday.

The State Department warned Americans this week not to travel to Lebanon.

In Washington, US Attorney General Merrick Garland said Thursday that the Justice Department is monitoring the rise of threats against Jewish, Muslim and Arab communities in the United States related to Israel's war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip./ VOA
