The charity Save the Children is calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to stop what it calls a humanitarian catastrophe. The organization's director for the Palestinian Territories, Jason Lee, told VOA in an interview from Jerusalem that children are paying the highest price from the conflict. Many of the 1,400 killed in the Hamas attack on Israel were children, as were some of the approximately 240 people being held hostage. Meanwhile, of the more than 10,000 people that the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health says have been killed in Gaza, 40 percent are children. Mr. Lee told colleague Keida Kostreci that the suffering of children will be the legacy of the international community, if it does not make the parties respect humanitarian law and protect civilians.
Reporter: Mr. Lee, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that Gaza has become "a graveyard for children", as the number of children who lose their lives increases every day. What is your organization's assessment of the situation on the ground?
Jason Lee: The situation in Gaza is dire and it's getting worse. We are now in a situation where every 10 minutes a child is killed and every 5 minutes a child is injured, with life-changing injuries. In addition to the deaths and injuries among children, 1.5 million people, 60% of the population in Gaza have been displaced, have left their homes. They are trying to shelter in schools and hospitals, in any building where they can be safe. But these buildings don't have enough water, they don't have enough food. And injured children and families have no access to medical care. Many families are forced to eat one meal a day. There is no drinking water in Gaza. In many of the schools, four times more civilians are being accommodated than the capacity of these schools. In a center in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, there are 22,500 people living in the school. The school has a maximum capacity of 2000 people. There are 16 bathrooms for over 22,000 people, which means they cannot maintain proper hygiene standards. Infectious diseases are spreading, cases of diarrhea. And of course, there is not enough water.
Water consumption for people in Gaza has dropped by 92% since pre-October 7 levels. This is a humanitarian disaster and children are paying the price.
Journalist: You mentioned these terrible figures that show the suffering of children. What are the short-term and long-term consequences for children living in these conditions?
Jason Lee: The long-term impact of conflict on children's mental health is tremendous. Unfortunately, this is not the first war that children in Gaza have gone through.
