US concerned with deportation of Afghans from Pakistan

The US government agency that monitors religious freedom around the world expressed concern over the treatment and forced deportation of Afghan refugees and asylum seekers from Pakistan.

In a statement on November 6, the US Commission on Religious Freedom (USCIRF) said it is concerned by reports of increased arrests, violence and intimidation of Afghan refugee communities in Pakistan.

More than 300,000 Afghans have already returned to Afghanistan from Pakistan after Islamabad announced on November 3 the repatriation of more than 1.7 million Afghans who do not have residency documents.

Since the deadline for voluntary departure expired on November 1, Islamabad has begun forcibly expelling Afghans.

Many Afghans, with valid visas and documents issued by Islamabad allowing them to legally stay in the country, have complained of being arbitrarily detained and threatened to leave the country.

"We are particularly concerned that the Pakistani government may forcibly return to Afghanistan religious minorities who have fled persecution," said USCIRF Commissioner David Curry.

"Under Taliban rule, Christians, Shia Muslims, Sikhs cannot freely practice their religious faith in Afghanistan," he added. Since the Taliban returned to power two years ago, the hardline government has applied Islamic Sharia law.

Human rights groups and members of religious minority communities have accused the Taliban of discrimination and persecution.

Taliban militants have killed, tortured and persecuted members of the Salafi sect, accusing them of supporting the Islamic State-Khorasan group, a rival jihadist group.

Other religious groups, such as the Hazara Shiites and Sikhs, have said that the Taliban are not allowing them to freely practice their religious faith./ Rel
