The birthday gift takes the life of the Ukrainian soldier, the 13-year-old boy
Chastyakov had received a gift box that included alcohol and six grenades, officials said.

A grenade given as a birthday present blew up and killed a close aide to the head of Ukraine's armed forces, Valery Zaluzhny, the BBC reports.

Major Hennadiy Chastyakov, 39, had returned to his apartment with gifts from his colleagues and was opening them with his son when the grenade exploded.

Maj Chastyakov was killed and his 13-year-old son was seriously injured.

The explosion has been described as a "tragic accident" and the minister called on the public to await the results of an official investigation. Police said the explosion at the family's apartment in Chaiky had been "as a result of careless handling of ammunition".

Five more grenades were found in the apartment.
