Von der Leyen, proposal for Israel-Gaza peace talks
The President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen

The President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said at a conference of EU ambassadors in Brussels (06.11.2023), that every possible effort should be undertaken to find a sustainable solution on the basis of two states , who can exist in peace and security next to each other. For this, five basic principles are needed.

As a possible first basic principle she mentioned an agreement that the Gaza Strip cannot provide shelter to terrorists. Secondly, according to the opinion of the president of the EU Commission, it can be agreed that there should be only one Palestinian Authority and only one Palestinian state. As a terrorist organization, Hamas should not control or govern Gaza.

"Thirdly there can be no long-term Israeli security presence in Gaza," von der Leyen added. The coastal strip is a substantial part of the future Palestinian state. Fourth, there should be no violent expulsion of Palestinians and Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, because this can only create more instability in the region.

As the fifth basic principle, von der Leyen mentioned an agreement, that there should be no continuous blockade in Gaza. 70 percent of young people in this region are unemployed. This necessarily encourages further radicalization.

EU increases humanitarian aid to Gaza

The EU has made another 25 million euros available as humanitarian aid for civilians in the Gaza Strip. According to the data of the president of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the aid promises currently reach a total volume of around 100 million euros. Efforts are also being made to increase the number of aid convoys and to enable transportation by ship. A maritime corridor from Cyprus could guarantee a regular flow of aid in the long term.

"All of us as a democracy and as people have the responsibility to do what is possible to protect civilians at risk," emphasized von der Leyen. Specifically, it was also addressed to Israel, which meanwhile, as a reaction to the large-scale offensive of the Islamist-militant Hamas, has bombed targets in the Gaza Strip en masse. Israel has the right to fight against the Hamas regime in Gaza. But it is also important that he tries to avoid civilian casualties. Because every human life, whether Israeli or Palestinian, has priority./ DW
