Turkey's opposition Republican People's Party elects a new leader

Turkish opposition leader Kemal K?l?çdaroglu was forced to resign on Sunday after the Republican People's Party (CHP) elected Ozgur Özel as its new leader, following defeats in May's parliamentary and presidential elections.

The delegates supported the 49-year-old Ozel, in the race against the 74-year-old K?l?çdaroglu, who has led the party for the past 13 years.

Despite gathering a large alliance for the May 14 elections, K?l?çdaroglu has failed to win.

Ozel, a political ally of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem ?mamoglu, has called for reforms in the party, Turkey's oldest.

The CHP aims to retain its important municipal positions in Istanbul and Ankara in next year's municipal elections.

Ozel, a pharmacist by profession, previously served as a parliamentary leader of the CHP./ Rel
