One of the first wars on European soil took place a thousand years earlier than scientists previously thought. Scientists have found traces of the oldest known conflict in Europe, namely in Spain, and the age of the found skeletons of ancient soldiers is estimated between 5000 and 5400 years.

This means that the conflict occurred even before large communities appeared in this area, scientists say. 

The number of damaged bones in the skeleton, most of which belonged to males, suggests that the injuries were inflicted in a battle that most likely lasted several months, said the study authors, who published their findings in the journal Scientific Reports. . 

They re-examined the skeletons of 338 people buried in a mass grave in a shallow cave in northern Spain, 23 percent of whom had some type of skeletal injury.

At the same site, they found 52 arrowheads, 36 of which had minor damage that could be attributed to hitting the target, the Guardian writes.

The reasons for the Spanish conflict are not known, but it is speculated that it was a matter of tensions between different cultural groups that inhabited that region in the late Neolithic era. /CNA
