Storm "Ciaran" hits Western Europe / Causes casualties and leaves

At least seven people have died and dozens have been injured as Storm Ciaran lashed northwestern Europe with torrential rain and winds of up to 200 km/h (124 mph), damaging homes and forcing schools to close and airlines and companies of training stop the services.

A truck driver was killed by a falling tree in northern France's Aisne department, authorities said Thursday, as more than 1.2 million people lost power, including about half the population of Brittany.

A 70-year-old man died in Le Havre after falling from his balcony in an accident police described as linked to the record-breaking winds of Storm Ciarán, while in Spain a woman was killed when a tree fell on her in the center of Madrid and three people were injured.

Two people died in the center of Ghent, Belgium, after being hit by falling tree branches. One of the victims was five years old, while the other was a 64-year-old German woman visiting Belgium. A third was seriously injured in the port city of Antwerp when a high wall was blown away by record winds, authorities said.

In the Netherlands one person was crushed to death by a tree in Venray in the southern province of Limburg, local media said. At least 10 more people were injured by flying debris across the country, at least three seriously./ CNA
