Iran has sentenced a French citizen to 5 years in prison. Louis Arnaud, 36, was convicted on charges related to national security.

Arnaud was arrested on September 28, 2022 after traveling through Italy, Greece, Turkey, Georgia and Armenia before heading to Iran.

His arrival in Iran coincided with a time when Iran was gripped by nationwide protests demanding better living conditions and more freedom. Arnaud's family said he "stayed away" from the riots.

Arnaud's mother, in a statement, said that her son's trial was held in the Revolutionary Court, and he was not allowed to have a lawyer present.

"These accusations that have been made against him, especially for propaganda and undermining the security of the Iranian state, are completely baseless," said Sylvie Arnaud in the statement published on November 8.

Iranian officials, or state media, have not confirmed his conviction.

Three French citizens, Cecile Kohler, Jacques Paris and a third unidentified person, are currently being held in Iran. Tehran has tried to link these people to the protests, accusing the West of inciting the protests in Iran.

The spokeswoman of the French Foreign Ministry, Anne-Claire Legendre, said that Arnaud's sentence is a violation of his fundamental rights and described the decision as "unacceptable"./ CNA
