Romania faces the risk of floods

Romanian authorities declared a state of high alert for the risk of flooding in two regions in the east of the country, and ordered the evacuation of residents.

Other parts of the country will be under high watch as torrential rain and strong winds are expected to hit the country on September 29.

Officials warned that risks have increased due to blocked waterways and other damage from deadly floods that hit Romania and much of central Europe earlier this month when Storm Boris inundated low-lying areas.

Romania's north-eastern counties of Galati and Vaslui, along the Danube River, again face high risks, as another storm is forecast for this week. The decision of the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA) to raise the alarms will remain in force until October 1.

"No person should stay in the danger zones", announced the municipal council of Galati.

"All the mayors from the endangered areas should evacuate the residents from there. We should not have any more loss of life", he said.

The council ordered that schools and other buildings outside the danger zones be prepared to accommodate the evacuees.

"The situation is worse than last time," said Costel Fotea, the president of the Galati county council.

"The waterways are blocked in many areas, the canals have not been completely cleaned and the amount of water predicted by meteorologists is very high," he added.

Meteorologists predicted that the heaviest rainfall will occur on September 29.

Flooding from storm Boris has killed six people in Galati and damaged thousands of homes. Twenty other people have lost their lives in general, including in the Czech Republic, Poland and other countries./ Rel
