Explosion near a gas station in Zveçan

The Kosovo Police have announced that an explosion occurred at midnight near a gas station in the center of Zveçan, a municipality inhabited by a majority of Serbs in the north of the country.

"Around midnight, near the gas station which is in the center of Zveçan, there was an explosion," the deputy director of the Kosovo Police for the north, Veton Elshani, told Radio Free Europe.

Elshani said that there were no injuries from this explosion and that police units went to the scene immediately.

"The case is considered to be the cause of general danger", emphasized Elshani.

It is not known what caused this explosion, which caused material damage to the gas station lodge and several cars nearby, he said. At the time of the explosion, the gas station was closed for service, according to him. A case like this is not rare in the north of Kosovo in recent years.

Throwing explosive devices and burning cars has been reported several times in this region, especially at the time of the re-registration of cars with illegal Serbian license plates in those of RKS - Republic of Kosovo.

Zvecan, together with Zubin Potok, North Mitrovica and Leposaviq, are the four municipalities with a Serbian majority in the north.

Tensions in this part of the country have been mostly high in recent months, due to what the Government of Kosovo considers to be steps to pretend sovereignty in that part.
