At least 30 dead from Hurricane Helene in the US

Hurricane Helene has caused extensive damage across Florida and the southeastern United States, leaving at least 30 people dead in four American states, as rescue teams continue operations to save people from flooding.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said dozens of people were trapped in buildings destroyed by the Category 4 hurricane.

The storm reached maximum winds of 225 kilometers per hour when it hit the Florida region on Thursday evening. But the storm caused damage even further north, as North Carolina is also facing flooding. Several hospitals in south Georgia were left without power, while a hospital in Tennessee was closed.

The devastation from Hurricane Helene comes as climate change is enabling such storms to become more powerful, and when they pass through warm waters they are becoming powerful hurricanes and typhoons, often within hours.

Five victims have been recorded in Florida. Victims were also reported in Georgia and the two Carolinas.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said the damage caused by Hurricane Helene appears to be greater than the damage caused by Hurricanes Idalia and Debby combined. These two hurricanes hit the US in August.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency deployed 1,500 additional workers in the morning and later in the day sent 400 rescuers to the affected areas.

The storm left more than 4 million homes and businesses without power Friday morning in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.

Atlanta has also been affected by flooding as a result of the hurricane.

Forecasters said the storm is expected to weaken as it moves through Tennessee and Kentucky.

Previously, Hurricane Helene had hit Mexico, causing flooding and other damage. Meanwhile, in the west of Cuba, Helene caused damage to the power system, leaving over 200,000 homes and businesses without electricity./ Rel
