Hungarian Prime Minister Orban, official visit to North Macedonia

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, together with a delegation from his Government, will stay for a two-day official visit to North Macedonia on September 26 and 27.

The Macedonian government announced that the Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Hristijan Mickoski, will meet Orban in Ohrid. During this visit, there will also be a series of bilateral meetings between the Macedonian ministers and their counterparts from the Hungarian delegation.

Hungary currently holds the Presidency of the European Union.

In Ohrid, the Macedonian police have taken the necessary security measures, while a temporary traffic stop has been announced, in order to guarantee safe and calm movement for the visiting delegation around the city and the surrounding area.

The ruling VMRO-DPMNE and its leader Prime Minister Mickoski are considered close to Orban and his party, Fidesz.

Immediately after the formation of the Government in Skopje in June, during the NATO summit in Washington that was held in the first half of July, Mickoski agreed with Orban that North Macedonia would receive a loan from Hungary in the amount of 500 million euros.

On September 17, the law on the Hungarian loan was approved in the Macedonian Parliament.

The former leader of VMRO-DPMNE and former Macedonian Prime Minister, Nikola Gruevski, is also in Hungary.

After falling from power, while several court cases against him were being developed in the country, Gruevski fled to Budapest in November 2018, where he received political asylum.

In 2013, Orban was on an official visit to the country, when he was awarded the "September 8" Order for exceptional merit in the development and strengthening of friendly relations and peaceful cooperation between North Macedonia and Hungary. The order was delivered to the then president Gjorge Ivanov, while he also met with the then prime minister Gruevski./ REL
