Zelensky: Not an alternative to exiting the war, but real peace
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on world leaders on Wednesday to stand by his country and seek not alternatives to "getting out of the war" with Russia, but real peace, more than two years after the large-scale attack by Moscow.

At a time when he faces growing pressure from Western allies and Ukrainian citizens to negotiate a ceasefire, Mr Zelenskyy said in his speech to the United Nations General Assembly that there was no alternative but the "peace plan" that he submitted two years ago.

Among other things, the plan calls for the removal of all Russian forces from Ukraine as well as holding them accountable for war crimes.

"Any parallel, or alternative, effort to establish peace would actually be an attempt to seek a way out of the war with Russia instead of ending the war. Don't divide the world. Unite as a nation and this will bring us peace", he called.

It has not yet been Russia's turn to speak at the UN Assembly, which brings together presidents, prime ministers and other high-ranking officials. Low-level diplomats took their seats in the Assembly hall while President Zelenksy was speaking.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is not attending this year's summit.

The war in Ukraine has been at the center of discussions at both of the last annual meetings of the United Nations. But this year, the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and the escalation of attacks on the Israeli-Lebanese border have received much attention.

Ukraine and Russia, which has one of the most powerful armies in the world, are fighting fiercely along a 1,000 kilometer front line.

Russia attacked its neighbor in February 2022 and so far thousands of people have been killed in the fighting.

President Zelenksy said during a speech to the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday that action must be taken to "force Russia to accept peace" and that there is no point in continuing peace talks with Putin.

In Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that the Ukrainian President's statements to "force" Moscow constituted a "fatal mistake" and that there will be inevitable consequences for Kiev.

President Zelenskyy is expected to present to President Joe Biden the plan that, according to him, will bring victory in Ukraine. He is expected to do this during the meeting with his counterpart Biden in Washington./ Voa
