At least 12 victims from an explosion in Dagestan, Russia

At least 12 people, including two children, have been killed in an explosion and subsequent fire at a gas station in Russia's Dagestan region, Russian authorities said Saturday.

Russia's Emergencies Ministry said another 11 people were injured.

Eight of the injured were hospitalized, Russian Deputy Health Minister Alexei Kuznetsov told Russian media. The fire was later extinguished.

The explosion occurred at a gas station on the outskirts of the regional capital, Makaçkala, near the village of Novi Kushet, the Emergencies Ministry said.

Makaçkala is located about 1,600 kilometers south of Moscow.

The ministry said the gas station was completely destroyed.

"The gas station and canteen are burning on an area of ??500 square meters. Two cars and a truck were damaged," the Ministry said on Telegram.

According to the local energy supplier, Dagenergo, energy facilities in the area of ??the blast have been damaged and power supply has been interrupted in the surrounding areas.

According to emergency services, cited by Russian news agencies, debris is being cleared at the scene and there may be people buried under the rubble.

The Department of the Investigative Committee of Dagestan opened an investigation into negligence and the manner in which safety rules were observed at the gas station.

The authorities declared September 28 a day of mourning in memory of the victims of the explosion, the Dagestan press service reported.

The RIA Novosti news agency, citing the Dagestan prosecutor's office, said the explosion occurred around 5:30 p.m. local time on September 27.

Telegram channel Shot reported that there were two explosions.
