At the request of the CDU parliamentary group, Weimar's constitutional judges ruled unanimously that the state parliament has the right to change the regulation before the election of the presidium. With this, the parliament can re-establish the rules on who has the right to propose. Until now, the proposal of the candidate was initially reserved for the largest parliamentary group, thus the AfD. With the change, König could be nominated in the first round of voting and get the necessary simple majority.

What did the Constitutional Court decide?

In a ruling on Friday evening, Thuringia's Constitutional Court made it abundantly clear that the chairman of the session, the oldest deputy in the state's first parliamentary session, Jürgen Treutler of the AfD, exceeded his authority in the first session. of the parliament of the land on Thursday and has violated the rights of the deputies several times. He should have decided on the quorum of the parliament in the meeting and then let the MPs vote on the provisional agenda.

Chaos in the parliament of Thuringia

The first session of the parliament of Thuringia after several hours of fierce debates on Thursday (26.09.) was interrupted. A routine parliamentary procedure, where the president of the parliament is elected and important posts are filled, turned into a bitter row between the AfD party, declared by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution as "safely far-right", and other parties in the parliament. The session was interrupted without being able to elect the president of the parliament of the land./ DW
