Two climbers die after falling from New Zealand's highest peak

Two climbers have died after falling from New Zealand's highest peak, Aoraki, or Mount Cook, which is known for its rugged terrain.

The two climbers were part of a group of four who were attempting to climb the 3,724-meter peak. The other two were not injured and were rescued by helicopter after contacting emergency services. The bodies of the dead climbers were found a few hours later, still attached to their climbing gear.

None of the climbers have been publicly identified, but New Zealand media reported that one of the victims was an internationally renowned mountain guide.

Nearly a year ago, three climbers from the United States and Canada went missing on the mountain. They were declared dead after a days-long search, although their bodies were never found, with authorities saying the search was hampered by bad weather. Dozens of people have died trying to climb Mount Cook. /CNA
