Germany warns its citizens: Avoid travel to Venezuela

The German Foreign Ministry has advised its citizens not to travel to Venezuela, following the worsening security situation in the Caribbean and a recent warning from the US Civil Aviation Authority.

The situation in the South American country is tense and could deteriorate further unexpectedly, according to a statement issued yesterday in the German capital. Berlin says Venezuela is run by an authoritarian regime and warns that in addition to roadblocks and police checks, restrictions on mobile phone networks and internet access are possible.

Recall that the American navy is amassing a large firepower presence in the Caribbean and since September, about twenty attacks have destroyed ships that Washington says were transporting drugs.

A day earlier, the US government added to its blacklist of foreign terrorist organizations the "Cartel de los Soles" (Cartel of the Suns), which it says is led by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. This organization, whose existence is disputed, includes, according to the Trump administration, officers of the Venezuelan armed forces and government officials.

Washington says the deployment of forces in the Caribbean and Pacific is part of an operation against drug trafficking. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil yesterday denied Washington's claim about the "Cartel of the Suns" saying the US is looking for a pretext to impose regime change in the country and take control of its oil. /CNA
