The government of Montenegro is getting closer to Belgrade and Moscow

By Ali Salaj VOA

Analysts estimate that the current government in Montenegro, with some actions, is politically offering itself to the official policy of Belgrade and Moscow. They say that the secret and quiet confrontation is first with its neighbors and then with the West. This, according to them, is proven by the approval of the resolution on the genocide in Jasenovac in the Parliament of Montenegro, initiated by the pro-Serbian and pro-Russian parties.

Analysts point out that the current concept of a part of the ruling majority in Montenegro, which is politically close to official Belgrade and Moscow, is to gradually and quietly confront first its neighbors and then the West.

According to them, this is proven by the adoption of the resolution on the genocide in Jasenovac, in the Parliament of Montenegro, initiated by the pro-Serbian and pro-Russian parties.

The well-known analyst Xhevdet Pepiq sees this action as a way to escape from the many current problems of society by returning to the past. "Through the resolution for Jasenovac, we try to deal with the past. We are a society where we are more confused with the dead than with the living. Today's Croatia has nothing to do with that tragic event, but it is easier to accuse the other of war crimes", says Pepiq.

Even the analyst and publicist Gjokë Dukaj expresses the similar attitude that by updating the past, it is not possible to move forward towards the European integration of Montenegro.

"The adoption of the resolution on the events of World War II in Jasenovac has caused a deep shock within the political spectrum here in Montenegro. It is interesting that the political structures which mainly deal with the past always insist on updating many issues from the past even though they are aware that with such attitudes one cannot move forward," said Mr. Dukaj.

Analyst Dukaj says that these actions of the parliamentary majority are done in order for Montenegro to get stuck on the path of European integration. Mr. Pepiq points out that with this resolution, the victims are being instrumentalized for political purposes.

"We are dealing more with resolutions than with vital issues for our society and the future. Dealing with the past, the dead are being instrumentalized for political purposes, bringing new divisions in the region", says analyst Pepiq.

Analysts estimate that the governing majority is harming the national interests of Montenegro where, among other things, it can stop the path of integration towards the European Union.

They estimate that the resolution is a fraud, due to the fact that no one contests the genocide in Jasenovac.

Jasenovac is commemorated as a concentration camp established during the Second World War on the territory of Croatia. Tens of thousands of people were killed and raped in Jasenovac, most of whom were Serbs, Roma and Jews. VOA
