A slow-moving heat wave, accompanied by potentially record temperatures, is spreading across the western United States, the National Weather Service announced.

The southeastern and central regions of the country are also facing a heat and humidity wave that is expected to last throughout the day on Saturday.

In Arizona's Maricopa County, which includes the city of Phoenix, at least 13 heat-related deaths have been confirmed this year, and another 160 suspected heat-related deaths are under investigation, according to a recent report.

The report does not include the death earlier this week of a 10-year-old boy in Phoenix who suffered a "heat-related medical incident" while walking with his family at a county park, the police department said.

Meanwhile, temperatures in what is known as California's Death Valley are forecast to reach 53.8 degrees Celsius on Sunday and then around 54.44 degrees Celsius by Wednesday.

The official world record for the hottest temperature recorded on Earth was set in Death Valley at 56.67 degrees Celsius in July 1913, but some experts dispute the data and say the real record is 54.44 degrees Celsius, recorded in July 2021./ VOA
