The European Union (EU) has said that it is ready to engage in talks with the newly elected president of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian.

Pezeshkian, the reformist lawmaker, won Iran's presidential runoff on July 5, becoming the ninth president of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

"We are aware of the outcome of the presidential elections in Iran and congratulate the president-elect Masoud Pezeshkian," said Nabila Massrali, the EU's spokesperson for foreign and security policy, in a post on "X".

"We are ready to engage with the new government in line with the EU policy of critical engagement," she wrote.

Pezeshkian has called for "constructive relations" with Western countries and supports the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and global powers.

After the 2015 nuclear deal, the US lifted sanctions against Iran, but in 2018, then-US President Donald Trump pulled out of the deal, and Washington has since reimposed sanctions that have crippled the Islamic republic's economy.

Efforts to revive the deal have failed, and Tehran has violated its terms by producing highly enriched uranium.

In March, "Bloomberg News" quoted a senior US Department of Defense official as saying that Iran was less than 12 days away from possessing the materials needed to produce a nuclear bomb./ REL
