The French go to the polls again this Sunday for the second round of the general election. In addition to the 500 members of the National Assembly, the next prime minister of France, who comes from the party that received the most votes, is also elected today.

French President Emmanuel Macron dissolved Parliament and called early legislative elections after the far-right defeated his centrist alliance in June 9 European Parliament elections.

A total of 577 members of the National Assembly are elected for 5-year terms in two rounds. There are 501 seats still up for election on Sunday after dozens of MPs were fully elected in the first round.

Marine Le Pen's far-right party led after the first round with 33% of the vote, according to Interior Ministry figures, with the left-wing alliance the New Popular Front trailing in second place with almost 28%.

President Macron's governing coalition drops to third place with 20%. The first results are expected to come out after the closing of the voting process at 20:00./ CNA
