A broad leftist coalition is heading into a tight race in the second round of France's parliamentary election on Sunday, ahead of President Emmanuel Macron's alliance with the far-right party, according to initial forecasts.

This means that no party will win a majority in the 577-seat Parliament.

That all major broadcasters have predicted victory for the leftist alliance and not for the National Rally of Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardellas.

Initial estimates after the end of voting at 20:00 predict that the leftist coalition will have around 172 to 215 parliamentary seats, President Macron's alliance between 150 and 180 seats, while the National Rally - which hoped to win a majority – 115 to 155 seats.

The French voted en masse on Sunday in a crucial second round of early parliamentary elections.

The National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen, scored a historic first-round victory last weekend, and she was expected to win the second round on July 7, increasing the likelihood that France will have a government led by extreme right for the first time since World War II.

French center-left leader Raphael Glucksmann said Sunday that France must find peace after the New Popular Front won the most seats in the second round of parliamentary elections.

The political culture must definitely change, Glucksmann emphasized, adding that a Parliament where no party has an overwhelming majority requires dialogue and openness.
