German government unveils action plan against organized crime

The German government has approved a new action plan aimed at cracking down on organized crime by targeting money laundering, accelerating asset seizure and strengthening coordination between authorities.

The cabinet approved the package on Wednesday, with Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil calling it a "game changer" in the fight against crime.

Under the plan, assets such as luxury cars and villas that are suspected of coming from dubious sources could be seized more quickly, while the suspected owners of the assets would have to prove that they were acquired legally.

Klingbeil said the aim is to financially harm criminals, reinforcing public confidence in the rule of law. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt added that authorities are hitting organised crime "where it hurts the most - in the pocket".

Also, customs authorities and the Federal Criminal Police Office will be able to access each other's data and analyze it using artificial intelligence.

Investigators will receive enhanced digital powers to scan large data sets with artificial intelligence to better identify suspects. /CNA
