Easter in Germany: Eggs, decorations, chocolate bunnies

Since February, shops in Germany are filled with chocolate eggs and rabbits. These are the signs of the Easter holiday, a holiday that has deep roots in Western culture. Eggs and rabbits symbolize new life and resurrection. Even nature begins to wake up, because spring is approaching - an ideal period to celebrate the feast of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Easter holiday is not celebrated on a fixed date, but varies from year to year. Easter Sunday always coincides with the spring full moon - which is usually in late March or early April. For Christians, the days from Black Friday, that is, the Friday before Easter, to Easter Monday are among the most important festive days of the year.

Customs have lost their religious interiority

Although many of the Easter customs have roots in the Christian faith, for many Germans these customs have lost their religious significance. So few themselves fast or commemorate on Black Friday the execution of the death penalty as well as the crucifixion of Jesus, or the resurrection of Jesus from the dead on Easter Sunday.

Believers who attend Easter masses in the church greet each other on Easter Sunday with the words: "Christ is risen" - "He is truly risen".

Chocolate eggs and bunnies

Everywhere you see egg baskets and chocolate bunny figures and trees decorated with colorful decorative eggs.

For Easter in Germany you often see children looking for eggs or sweets in the yard or garden of the house. The children are convinced that the Easter bunny has hidden the eggs, sweets or other gifts during the night.

Hiding and hunting for sweets and small gifts is a beautiful tradition that Germans continue to keep for Easter.

There are also local traditions in different areas. For example, in Horhausen in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, a competition takes place where each player chooses a hard-boiled, colored egg and throws it. Whoever throws the egg the farthest wins. /DW
