Federal investigators have revealed new details about what happened in the moments before a freighter lost power and struck Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge, including the pilot's emergency call for help and authorities' efforts to remove people from the bridge.

The first sign of concern came three minutes before the collision, when the cargo ship's pilot radioed for a tugboat in the area to come to his aid, the chairwoman of the National Transportation Safety Board said at a news conference Wednesday. , Jennifer Homendy.

Within a minute, police officers on both ends of the bridge were ordered to stop traffic crossing the bridge, said Marcel Muise, the NTSB investigator in charge of investigating the collapse, an action some officials have credited with saving lives.

Investigators had their first full day at the scene Wednesday and witnessed the "complete destruction" of the drawbridge. 

"When I look at something like this, I'm not thinking about the container ships going through, I'm thinking about the families that have lost loved ones," Homendy said.

Six construction workers who were on the bridge are now presumed dead and two of their bodies were found trapped in a submerged truck on Wednesday, police said.

Search efforts for the other four have been suspended until rescue teams can clear the heavy underwater debris believed to be covering their remains.

NTSB teams used the vessel's voyage data recorder, or VDR, to piece together a rough timeline of events leading up to the crash. But it will take months for them to gather the reams of physical evidence, maintenance records, ship records and witness interviews required to produce a full report, Homendi said. /CNA
