Latvia expels a Russian diplomat for "provocative communication"

Latvia has declared "non grata" (person undesirable) an employee of the Russian Embassy in Riga and expelled him from the country.

At the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the diplomat must leave Latvia by April 10.

Through an announcement, the authorities announced that the charge d'affaires at the Russian mission was informed of this decision.

The Russian diplomat was expelled for what the Latvian side called "unacceptable and provocative public communication that has been developed by the Embassy for a long time" and that was in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Despite repeated reprimands, the Russian Embassy has engaged in inaccurate public communications aimed at discrediting Latvian state institutions and inciting hatred in society, the statement said, without giving further details.

Latvia, a former Soviet republic bordering Russia, is home to a large minority of Russian descent.

The invasion that Russia launched against Ukraine in February 2022 has increased tensions between Moscow and Riga even more./ REL
