Civilians killed by Russian attacks in Ukraine

Russian forces have shelled the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, killing one person and wounding 16 others, the city's mayor, Ihor Terekhov, said, as Ukraine's Foreign Ministry again called on Washington for more air defense systems.

On March 27, at least two civilians were also killed by Russian attacks in eastern and southern Ukraine.

The attack in Kharkiv targeted a residential building, Terekhov wrote on Telegram, describing the attack as "another act of bloody terror against Ukrainians."

Kharkiv Governor Oleh Synyehubov said two attacks occurred in a district of Kharkiv city, reporting damage to civilian infrastructure.

A five-story building sustained heavy damage and so did the Emergency Institute, he said.

In recent weeks, the Russians have intensified airstrikes against Ukraine targeting key infrastructure, including power stations, in retaliation for bombings in Russian border regions.

During an online conference on March 27, Ukraine's top diplomat, Dmytro Kuleba, called for urgent deliveries of air defense systems.

"In addition, the current Russian attacks are intense and are using ballistic missiles that can reach targets at an extremely high speed, giving little time for people to take shelter, and causing great damage," he said.

"Patriot and similar systems are crucial. They are designed to protect lives, not take lives," he said, referring to American-made missiles.

Earlier in the week, during an interview with Politico, Kuleba said that Ukraine desperately needs these surface-to-air missiles to defend against Russian attacks, as the Russian-led invasion of Ukraine is now well into its year. third./ REL
