Spain's most visited city has increased the new increased tourist tax, which will come into force from 1 April 2024. Tourists in Barcelona will now have to pay the city tax, which has increased from 2.75 to 3 .25 euros, showing an increase of 18 percent or a price increase of 0.50 euros, SchengenVisaInfo reports.

On top of the city tax, Euronews reports that tourists in Barcelona will also have to pay the regional tax, which varies depending on the type of accommodation where they will be staying.

The regional tax can cost between €1.70 and €3.50 per night, depending on the type of accommodation visitors have chosen. For example, visitors staying in four-star hotels will have to pay €1.70, while the price for those staying in rented accommodation is €2.25 and for five-star hotels it is €3.50.

The price increases are aimed at establishing quality tourism instead of mass tourism, emphasizes the mayor of Barcelona. The authorities estimate that the fee will generate 100 million euros in 2024, which will be allocated to increase the city's budget.

"The required objective was: to contain the number of tourists and increase the income from tourists because our model is no longer mass tourism, but quality tourism, which adds value to the city", said Jaume Collboni, deputy mayor of the Municipality. 

Callboni also revealed that economic data has already reached 2019 levels in terms of revenue generated by tourists visiting the city. Every year, more than 32 million visit Barcelona./ CNA
