Petition against the construction project of former President Trump's

An opposition group in Serbia has started collecting signatures for a petition against a construction project that would be financed by the company of the son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump, at the former headquarters of the Serbian army, which was destroyed in the NATO bombing campaign. -s in 1999.

Earlier this month, Jared Kushner confirmed reports that his company plans to finance a project in downtown Belgrade that would include a hotel, a luxury apartment complex as well as office and retail space.

In the petition launched on Monday, the Serbian government is asked to respect the law, which states that the building can only be returned to its original function. The organizers said that the Museum of Serbian History should be built there.

The opposition group "Move and Change" said that 10,000 people signed the petition in less than 24 hours.

"This is a matter of pride of the state and citizens, and we have a good example when the terrorists brought down the Twin Towers in New York, the Americans did not give that place to some Arab investors to build their hotels. They erected a monument to the victims," ??said Savo Manojlovic, the group's leader.

Pro-Trump government officials in Serbia have welcomed the project, but the opposition has spoken out against it.

For many, the bombed Serbian army command building is a powerful symbol of Serbia's resistance against what they call NATO aggression 25 years ago.

A group of protesters with Serbian and Russian flags gathered in front of this building on Sunday on the anniversary of the start of the NATO bombing that ended the suppression of Kosovo Albanians by Serbian forces.

About 13,000 people, mostly Albanians, were killed during the war in Kosovo, which ended with the intervention of NATO led by the United States.

Kosovo declared independence in 2008, but Belgrade, supported by Russia, continues to oppose its citizenship.

Earlier this month, Albania said it had received an investment project from Mr Kushner's company, Affinity Partners, to convert a former military base on the Adriatic island of Sazan into a holiday resort.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama welcomed the plan, calling it a fantastic offer./ VOA
