Relations between Biden and Netanyahu deteriorate/ The Israeli Prime Minister

Relations between President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have soured after the US drafted a resolution for a cease-fire in Gaza. This brought a very strong reaction from the leader of Israel.

Netanyahu abruptly cut short a visit to Washington this week with a delegation to discuss Israel's assault on the southern Gaza city of Rafah after the US abstained in a Security Council vote calling for an immediate cease-fire between Israel and Hamas and the release of all hostages held by Palestinian militants.

The suspension of that meeting puts a major new hurdle in the way of US efforts to get Netanyahu to consider the alternatives of a ground occupation of Rafah, the last relatively safe haven for Palestinian civilians.

The threat of such an offensive has raised tensions between longtime allies the United States and Israel and raised questions about whether the U.S. might limit military aid if Netanyahu defies Biden and moves forward.

Biden's decision to abstain from the UN, which comes after months of mostly sticking to long-standing US policy of defending Israel at the world body, appeared to reflect growing US frustration with the Israeli leader.

The president, who is running for re-election in November, faces pressure not only from America's allies but from a growing number of fellow Democrats to rein in Israel's military response to Hamas' deadly cross-border creep./ CNA
