Netanyahu cancels the visit of the Israeli delegation to the US
Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has canceled a planned visit to Washington by a high-level delegation in protest at the United Nations Security Council's decision to pass a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

The resolution passed by 14 votes to none, after the United States decided not to use a veto, but abstained.

Netanyahu accused the US of "retreating" from what he said was a "principled position" by allowing the resolution to pass without making the ceasefire conditional on the release of hostages held by Hamas, the designated Palestinian terrorist group. from the USA and the European Union.

The Israeli delegation was scheduled to present to White House officials Israel's plans for an expected ground invasion of the Gaza town of Rafah, where more than 1 million Palestinian civilians have taken refuge from fighting in other parts of the enclave.

In the past, the US has vetoed Security Council resolutions calling for a cease-fire in Gaza. But last week Washington itself introduced a resolution calling for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza. However, the text was opposed by Russia and China, who vetoed it.

The war in Gaza began after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, killing nearly 1,200 people and kidnapping nearly 250 others. As a result of the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, more than 32,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed, according to the Ministry of Health in the enclave led by Hamas.

Before this resolution, the Security Council had approved two of the eight resolutions presented on the Israel-Hamas war. The approved resolutions mainly concerned the delivery of humanitarian aid./ REL
