Korcok and Pellegrini continue the race for president in Slovakia

The final results of the first round of the presidential elections in Slovakia have shown that former Foreign Minister Ivan Korcok is leading the race.

Korcok, a liberal, leads with 42.5 percent of the vote, according to official results published by the Election Commission on Sunday.

He will now compete against Slovakian Parliament Speaker Peter Pellegrini in the second round of elections on April 6, after neither candidate won a majority.

Pellegrini won 37 percent of the votes, despite the fact that in the polls before the elections, higher figures were mentioned.

The turnout in Saturday's elections was 51.9 percent.

Pellegrini's party is part of the ruling coalition in the left-wing government of Prime Minister Robert Fico.

The right-wing populist party, the Slovak National Party, is also part of the coalition.

Korcok is supported by the opposition.

The current president, Zuzana Caputova, has not run for a second five-year term, despite her popularity.

There were nine men in the race for president.

The topics of the war in Ukraine and the internal disagreements between Fico's leadership and the liberal opposition have dominated the debates, as currently Slovakia is deeply divided in political positions./ CNA
