After Russian drone attacks, electricity is restored in Ukraine

Ukraine's air force said on Saturday it shot down 31 of 34 drones launched overnight by Russia, as the country continues to recover from Friday's massive Klemlin attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

The military said the drones were downed in central, southern and southeastern Ukraine.

However, power workers are still working to restore electricity to some households, a day after Moscow carried out what Kiev described as the biggest attack on the country's power grid since the start of the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote in a post on the Telegram network that in the most affected regions it was possible to restore power, but that the situation remains difficult in the Kharkiv region, which was hit hard.

Authorities said residents of the city of Kharkiv, as well as the western Khmelnytskyi region, were still without power.

The Russian attack left at least five people dead, while more than 1 million residents were left without power.

One of Friday's attacks damaged one of two power lines supplying Europe's largest nuclear power plant, that of Zaporizhzhia in southeastern Ukraine.

On Saturday morning, two people were killed and seven wounded by Ukrainian airstrikes in Russia's Belgorod region, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said.

An overnight attack by Ukraine in Russia's Samara region caused a fire at a major oil refinery.

On the other hand, Russia's Ministry of Defense said on Saturday that its forces had taken control of the village of Krasnoye in the Donetsk region of Ukraine./ VOA
