Major attacks within Russia over the years

One of the deadliest attacks in the past 25 years in Russia occurred on March 22, when gunmen stormed a concert hall near Moscow, killing at least 93 people.

From 1999 onwards, several major attacks took place within Russia:

- Bombs destroyed apartment blocks in Moscow, Bujnaksk and Volgodonsk. More than 200 people were killed. Moscow blamed the Chechens, while the latter blamed the Russian secret services.

- Chechen rebels take 700 people hostage in a theater in Moscow. Russian special forces stormed the building and 129 hostages and 41 Chechen fighters died - most of them from the effects of the narcotic gas that Russian forces used to subdue the attackers.

- An explosion hits a commuter train outside Jesentuki station in southern Russia. Forty-six people were killed and 160 were injured.

- A suicide attack on an underground train in Moscow left at least 39 people dead and more than 100 injured. Authorities blamed Chechen separatists.

- Two Russian passenger planes are blown up almost simultaneously by suicide bombers, killing 90 people. The first, the Tu-134, while flying to Volgograd, crashed south of Moscow. Minutes later, the Tu-154, en route to Sochi, crashed near Rostov-on-Don.

- More than 300 hostages - half of them children - died at School No. 1 in the North Ossetian city of Beslan after it was seized by rebels demanding Chechen independence and an immediate end to the war there.

- Ten people are killed and 50 injured when a bomb explodes in a market on the outskirts of Moscow.

- A bomb derails the Nevsky Express train between Moscow and St. Petersburg, with about 700 people on board. At least 26 people lost their lives and 100 were injured. Chechen rebels claimed responsibility.

- At least two explosions hit subway stations in Moscow, killing 40 people.

– More than 30 people are killed and around 130 injured in a suicide attack at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport.

- Two suicide bombers kill 34 people at a railway station in the city of Volgograd, less than two months before the 2014 Winter Olympics begin in Sochi.

– Sixteen people, including a suspected attacker, were killed when an explosion hit a train car in a subway tunnel in the city of Saint Petersburg./REL
