Congress Approves $1.2 Trillion Budget/ Partial Government Shutdown Avoided

The US Congress approved in the early hours of Saturday a state budget bill that captures as much as 1.2 trillion dollars and sent it to President Joe Biden to sign it into law. The budget will fund the US government for the fiscal year that began six months ago and avoid a partial shutdown. The bill was approved with 74 in favor and 24 against.

Key federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, the Department of State and the Treasury, which includes the tax agency, will be funded through Sept. 30 after the measure passed in the Democratic-majority Senate.

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives on Friday approved a $1.2 trillion bill to fund the government through September, giving the Democratic-majority Senate hours to act before the deadline expires.

The 286-134 vote signaled the end of a more than six-month battle over the budget for the fiscal year that began Oct. 1.

But the move by Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, who bypassed hard-line members of his caucus by passing the bill with more support from Democratic than Republican lawmakers, angered Legislator Marjorie Taylor Greene, who called for his removal from the post of President.

That could trigger a repeat of the scenes of early October, when a small group of hard-line Republicans angry that Mr Johnson's predecessor, Kevin McCarthy, had passed an interim budget despite their objections, ousted him from office. the post of the Speaker of the House of Representatives./ VOA
