Journalists swim to mark first anniversary of Evan Gershkovich's

Journalists swam at 10 Brighton beaches around the world on Saturday to mark the one-year anniversary of US journalist Evan Gershkovich's imprisonment in Russia.

Gershkovich, a reporter for the American newspaper Wall Street Journal, was detained in March of last year while he was in Russia for work commitments, and was accused of espionage, accusations that the media where he works for and the American Government have rejected.

Saturday's swim across different beaches around the world was a sign of solidarity and this activity was chosen because of Gershkovich's love for Brighton Beach in Britain and New York.

Gershkovich moved to Russia in 2017 to work as a correspondent from this country, first for the Moscow Times and AFP, and then for the American Wall Street Journal.

This 32-year-old then moved to London, after the start of Russia's war in Ukraine, but he returned again on several occasions, due to the need for reporting.

His colleagues have said that "Evan is one of the nicest people you will meet and the fact that he is in a Russian prison for a year, just because he did his job, is sad."

They said they swam to bring attention to the injustice he is experiencing and to let him know he is not forgotten.

The editors of the Wall Street Journal have said the anniversary is fueling outrage and that the paper will step up efforts to free Gershkovich./ REL
