Trump in legal battles, Biden vows to defend health care law

The second-tier court in New York decided today to postpone the deadline for the execution of the fine of 454 million dollars imposed on former President Donald Trump for fraud with the value of the business, if he manages to post a bond of 175 million dollars within 10 days.

If the former president posts the required bond, he can continue the process of appealing the decision of the court of first instance, without confiscation of his assets by the state of New York.

After pleading guilty to ongoing fraud in his business practices, former President Donald Trump faces a deadline Monday to post $454 million in cash bail in New York court.

Former President Trump announced Friday on his social media platform "Truth Social" that he has the money needed and repeated arguments made earlier in Palm Beach, Florida, about the court case based on the civil suit.

"This was a manipulated judicial process, with a corrupt judge and a corrupt prosecutor. They want to take the money so that I can't use it for the electoral campaign ," Mr. Trump said.

Democratic lawmaker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was asked during Sunday's "State of the Union" show on CNN whether Mr. Trump's accusation against the prosecutor and judge for a "witch hunt" against him could help her politically.

"Has there ever been a president, whether Republican or Democrat, against whom criminal charges have been filed and criminal investigations have been conducted? This is not about a party, this has nothing to do with politics, this has to do with corruption and criminality ," she said.

On NBC's "Meet the Press," former Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel commented on the announcements of a new fundraising organization by the Republican committee and Mr. Trump's campaign team and whether it is appropriate to Mr. Trump to ask donors to pay his legal bills.

"If they really want to support him on his legal bills, then they have every right to do so. And I think he's being very open about helping him pay his legal bills ," Ms. McDaniel said.

As he runs for a second term in the White House, President Joe Biden hosted a virtual event on Saturday. Along with his Democratic predecessor Barack Obama and former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, President Biden focused on the issue of affordable health care.

"In this election, there are two completely different visions of America. It's that simple. My vision, our vision for a future where people have the freedom and security of affordable health care, low drug costs and a little more breathing room ," said President Biden.

He assured voters he would keep the Affordable Health Care Act, known as Obamacare, in place and criticized former President Trump for vowing to repeal it, even though 20 million people have signed up for the program this year alone. / VOA
